Alton Wayne Propst (32) of Elkin was charged after an undercover drug operation conducted by Wilkes County Sherrif’s Office which carried over into an incident in Elkin where he was able to elude police.
According to a release by the Wilkes County Sheriff’s Office on Thursday evening deputies were conducting an undercover drug operation. Propst left the undercover location within Wilkes County, and headed towards Surry County at which time surveilling Wilkes County deputies contacted Surry County and Elkin officers to advise them of their location while following their suspect.
Wilkes County deputies attempted a vehicle stop near Carter Mill Road and North Bridge Street in Elkin. According to reports as Wilkes County deputies approached the suspect vehicle the driver accelerated and drove toward the Wilkes County deputies. Deputy John Watson, who was in the path of the suspect vehicle, fired two shots from his service weapon, which deputies believe struck the suspect vehicle.
There is no indication that Propst was injured during this incident.
The suspect vehicle then fled north bound on North Bridge Street. Wilkes County deputies lost sight of the suspect vehicle. Propst nor the suspect vehicle have been located as of this time. The suspect vehicle is a dark colored Nissan/Toyota passenger vehicle.
Although not arrested at this time Propst has been charged with: Possession with Intent to Sale and Deliver Schedule I Controlled Substance
Possession with Intent to Sale and Deliver Schedule II Controlled Substance
Assault with Deadly Weapon on a Government Official – (2x)
The incident that occurred on North Bridge Street, Elkin is being investigated by the Elkin Police Department. The drug offenses are being investigated by the Wilkes County Sheriff’s Office. Both of these investigations are ongoing. No other information is available for release at this time.
