Elkin man dies during tree clean up

Staff Report

A 75-year-old man was attempting to remove a tree that had fallen into a field on the family farm on New Year’s Eve when a fatal accident occurred.

Jerry Dale Park, of Pleasant Ridge Road in Elkin, was using a tractor to push a tree off a field on Parks Road off Friendship Church Road at about 2:40 p.m. Saturday afternoon when a limb from the tree came up over the loader portion killing Park, according to Surry County Emergency Services Director John Shelton.

“The tree had fallen from the woods line just inside the field,” stated Shelton, explaining that the loader is the front of the tractor.

CC Camp Volunteer Fire Department, Elkin Rescue Squad and Surry County EMS responded to the call.

A memorial service will be held for Park Wednesday at 2 p.m. at Pleasant Ridge Baptist Church.
