The Town of Elkin announced through a proclamation that March 11-17 is Multiple Sclerosis Awareness Week - 2013 through a proclamation.

Multiple sclerosis is a chronic and disabling disease of the nervous system in which the progression, severity and specific symptoms cannot be foreseen, say doctors.

According to Elkin Mayor Lestine Hutchens, someone new is diagnosed with MS every hour.

“The disease can erode a person’s abilities and hopes, halt a careen and unravel the fabric of families,” she said.

Hutchens said that finding a cause and developing a method of prevention for multiple sclerosis is an important task that all Americans and North Carolinians should support.

“We encourage anyone in our community who has multiple sclerosis, or a family member with MS, to learn more about the resources, programs, information and support available through the National MS Society and other agencies,” said Mayor Hutchens.

“We are grateful Elkin has chosen to support our efforts to create a word free of MS,” said Cameron Harris, director of Development and Operations of the Central North Carolina Chapter of the National MS Society.
