Editor’s note: This is part of a series of stories of career and technical education students.

Sierra Booher and Noah Smith are in the agricultural portion of the Career and Technical Education (CTE) program at Elkin High School.

“Both are hard workers who embody the ideals indicative of an agricultural student,” said Barbara Long, CTE Director for Elkin City Schools.

Clarence Edwards, an agricultural teacher in the CTE program at Elkin High School, described Booher as “a tremendous help and an absolute joy to have in class.”

He called Smith “a very respectable young man who is very knowledgable in many of the content areas in out agriculture program.”

Smith is in 10th grade, and Sierra in 11th grade.

Between the two of them, they have taken: Personal Finance, Teen Living, Foods I and II, Fundamentals of Technology, Agriscience Applications, Environmental & Natural Resources I and II, and Horticulture I and II.

Booher wants to be a veterinarian due to her love of working outside and in the greenhouse. For one of her Supervised Agricultural Experiences (SAEs), she was responsible for watering plants in the greenhouse and weeding strawberry plants in the community, said Long.

Smith chose to work on a farm and train dogs for his SAE.

“The SAEs are good because they give the students an opportunity to go out and help someone while learning about agriculture,” he said. He hopes to attend college after graduation and major in a field related to environmental and natural resources.

Both students emphasized that the part of the agricultural program they loved best was the hands-on and outdoor aspects of the program, as well as working on something to see it become a finished product.
