YADKINVILLE - Despite snowy and icy conditions, more than 1,100 walkers and runners turned out in support of Austin Macemore Saturday morning for the Race More for Macemore 5K.
Just hours after an ice storm hit the area and delayed the start of the race by more than two hours, thousands came to the streets of Yadkinville to raise money for Macemore.
“It was truly a blessing from a gracious God that we were able to, not only, overcome the conditions and run the race but enjoy precious time together while we waited,” said Roby Snyder in a statement sent to racers via email. “The support you showed for Austin and his family was overwhelming.
“From the beginning, it was clear this was never just a race but an opportunity for a community to show love and compassion to a very much loved young man, as well as, one another,” the statement continued. “I hope you will join Austin Macemore and friends sometime next year for the Second Annual Race More For Macemore event.”
Eric Blackburn from State Road brought home the overall title with a time of 16:02. Blackburn is Macemore’s first cousin.
Logan Matthew Haynes of Hamptonville (17:45), Cody Newby of Greensboro (17:58), Andrew Justin Howard of Mount Airy (18:11) and Yadkinville’s Nathan Wheeer (18:14) rounded out the top five finishers.
Debbie Garner from State Road was the overal female winner, finishing with a time of 21:01. Winston-Salem natives Rachel Friel (21:18) and Courtney Fawcett (22:55) rounded out the top female runners.
According to Twin City Track Club’s website, a total of 1,107 runners/walkers recorded a time.
