On January 18, 2013 the Yadkin Valley Sewer Authority had a sewer overflow of 10,000 gallons from the excessive amount of rain, said the authority in a press release.

The untreated wastewater reached the Yadkin River of the Yadkin River Basin. The spill was reported to the Department of Water Quality, according to the release.

“The manhole behind the regional pump station backed up,” said Nicole Johnston, executive director for the Yadkin Valley Sewer Authority. “We’ve had so much rain from the storm that hit our region that our pumps were on overdrive.

“We dispatched our crew and discovered the spill,” Johnston indicated.
