BOONVILLE - Starmount’s unbeaten run through the Mountain Valley Conference in 2012 was more dominant, even historical, this season than in years past.

Not only did the Lady Rams cruise through 16 matches against conference opponents unscathed, they did not surrender a single set. Starmount swept all 16 matches, posting a perfect 48-0 record against MVAC foes, a feat that head coach Jon Symons said he’d never accomplished.

“I don’t think I’ve ever had a team go 48-0. That would be something cool,” he said prior to the final match against North Wilkes.

The Lady Rams completed the perfect run with a 3-0 sweep over the Lady Vikings last Wednesday on Senior Night, 25-10, 25-10, 25-18.

Led by reigning player of the year Ashton Gregory’s 15 kills and seven blocks, Starmount captured its fifth-straight conference title and finished the regular season with a 25-3 mark.

Haley Hartman, Josie Matthews, Rachel Wagoner added five kills apiece, while Hunter Welborn added four blocks.

Sydney Caudle was a perfect 13-for-13 on serves with Erin Barr tallying 24 assists.

After securing the conference title and the No. 1 seed in the 2A state playoffs, Starmount turned its focus on making a run through the bracket.

First up, the Rams breezed past East Davidson in three sets, 25-7, 25-10, 25-13 Saturday afternoon in Boonville.

Gregory led the way with 13 kills and two blocks, while Matthews finished with seven kills and four digs. Hartman added six kills and three digs with Welborn tallying four kills and six service aces.

Barr finished with 27 assists and five aces with Wagoner posting a perfect 10-for-10 behind the serving stripe.

Leading comfortably, Symons elected to play reserves in the final set. Leah Simpson finished with three kills, while Ashley Johnson added two service aces.

With the win, Starmount advanced into the second round. The Rams will take on Wheatmore Tuesday night at home.
