ELKIN- Freda Nixon, our loving mother, grandmother, great-grandmother and great-great-grandmother, went to be with her Lord and Savior on Sunday, Nov. 29, 2009 at Hugh Chatham Memorial Hospital.

Mrs. Nixon was born Dec. 18, 1915 in Surry County to George Washington and Margie Mae Wolfe Draughn.

She worked side by side with her husband, Charlie, in his auto garage and could rebuild a car motor just as well as he could.

She will be remembered for her love of her church, of which she was a lifetime member, her undying faith in the Lord, her unceasing love for her family, and her daily handwritten notes to family and friends.

She will also be remembered for her crafts, for her love of all creatures great and small, her kindness to others, her delicious pies, cakes and chicken and dumplings, and for learning to drive a car when she was 60.

In addition to her parents, Mrs. Nixon was preceded in death by her husband, Charlie Nixon; a sister, Hazel Morrison; and a brother, Kent Draughn.

She is survived by two daughters, Betty Hayes and husband, Clyde, of Elkin and Clara Coffey, also of Elkin; one sister, Janice Wallace of Richmond, Va.; five grandchildren, Cathy Grisson and husband, Richard, Olivia Delacruz and husband, Fredy, Brian Ratledge, Jeff Hayes and wife, Sandra, and Lynn Hayes; eight great-grandchildren; and three great-great- grandchildren.

A graveside service will be conducted today, Dec. 2, at 10:30 a.m. in Elkin Valley Baptist Church Cemetery.

A Celebration of Life will be held at 11 a.m. in the church.

The family will receive friends following the service in the Christian Life Center.

In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to Elkin Valley Baptist Church, Lottie Moon Christmas Offering, 118 N. Elkin Drive, Elkin, NC 28621, or to Hugh Chatham Nursing Center, 700 Johnson Ridge Road, Elkin, NC 28621.

The family wishes to thank the Hugh Chatham Nursing Center and the staff on the third floor of Hugh Chatham Memorial Hospital for their caring acts of kindness to our mother.
