Elkin High School announced Thursday afternoon that Coach Richard Grissom has decided to retire from his teaching position at the school effective Oct. 1.
Grissom currently teaches physical education and weight-lifting.
This retirement from teaching will not impact his role as head football coach of the Buckin’ Elks, principal Mark Byrd said.
“Coach Grissom is certainly welcome to remain as head football coach as long as he wants,” Byrd said. “While I hate it for our students that he will not be teaching in the classroom anymore, I know he is ready for this move. I just hope we can keep him teaching on the football field for a long time to come.”
The teaching vacancy is currently being advertised and will be filled as soon as possible.
Grissom’s Buckin’ Elks (4-0) will take on independent schools football power Charlotte Latin tonight.
