The countys recreation swim team won its first two meets earlier this month and then gave the defending conference champions from Long Creek a good run in its third competition last Thursday. It has been years since the Stingrays have started a season 2-0, and I believe that can only mean there are great things to come for us, coach Joy Prim said. The Stingrays have traditionally been one of the smaller teams in its swim league, but that doesnt look to be the case this summer. The Rays boast a roster of 83 strong. They also have talent up and down the lineup, from a high school state champion (recent Starmount graduate Julianna Prim) to returning conference medalists in other age groups. In its two meets last week, Yadkin swamped Pinebrook 460-250 before falling to the reigning league champions from Long Creek 469-324. This years team is the biggest team the Stingrays have had in a long time, coach Prim said. The size allows us to be competive across all age groups and we have taken teams by surprise this year. Swimming a team like Long Creek, who in years past has been twice our size ... is always tough because they are so big and good. This year, we had many close races and though we did lose, many of our swimmers swam personal best times and tried new events. Sierra Winters (10-under girls), Grace Cesare (12-under girls) and Noah Medwin (12-under boys) won all four of their individual events against Long Creek. Sean Evans (10-under boys) was a triple winner. Tessa Cesare won the 25 backstroke in the 10-under girls division and placed behind only Sierra Winters in three other races. Sierra Collins won the 100 individual medley in the 14-under girls division and was second in a trio of other events. Cory Eaton had one first-place and three second-place finishes in the 18-under boys bracket. Carissa Hurt and Tanner Hartness won events in the 6-under division. Sarah Hayden touched first in the 25 butterfly for 8-under girls. Lyncee Kowalcik won the 50 backstroke and Kimberly Benton aced the 50 butterfly among 18-under girls. Tyler Eaton was second in all four of his individual events in the 12-under boys division. Bryan Winters was either second or third in his four events in the 14-under boys competition. The meet overall was a great learning experience for everyone and we were the closest we have been to them in years, Joy Prim said. I couldnt be more pleased with the way the races turned out. Coach Prim praised her 9-10 girls and 11-12 boys relay teams, which swept the freestyle and medley races. Gina Myers, Taylor Baity, Sarah Hayden, Ian Grooms and Ian Medwin swam key legs in those events. Yadkin swam with a somewhat depleted lineup on Tuesday night at North Forsyth, falling in that competition (complete results not available at press time). The Stingrays share a number of their swimmers with the nearby Elkin Wet Lightning, which had its first home meet Tuesday. Since Yadkin and Elkin do not compete in the same league, local swimmers can race for both teams, something that has been done for years. A group of Stingrays will swim in a city meet in Winston-Salem today, and others will suit up for the State Games in Huntersville on Saturday and Sunday. The next home meet is Thursday, July 2 against Greenrbriar. The conference finals are July 10-11. Julianna Prim, Sierra Collins, the Eatons and the Cesares are among those swimming for both Yadkin and the Elkin Wet Lightning. Former Surry Central High School standout Jillian Kowalcik is helping coach the Rays again this summer. With such an improvement, we are hoping to definitely improve our conference finish, coach Prim said. I believe we have a good shot to have many of our relays medal.
