East Wilkes High School graduate Dalton Buzzard completed boot camp Friday, April 26. He is enlisted in the Navy and is training as a nuclear electronics technician.
Buzzard’s division graduated as a Chief of Naval Operations Honor (CNO) Div. 157.
“Boot camp was a heck of a ride, but it was only the beginning of the rest of my life. I was pretty sure this is what I wanted to do before I joined, and now I know it was the best decision I have ever made,” Buzzard said.
Buzzard said boot camp was “a breeze” for him, but he acknowledged that the nuclear energy courses he was beginning would be some of the most difficult and challenging times he has ever experienced.
Dalton is currently training at the Navy Nuclear Power Training Command in Charleston, S.C. His grandmother, Judy Buzzard, said he plans to be stationed on an aircraft carrier in Norfolk, Va.
His grandmother also said his uncle was in the Navy and has been serving for 16 years.
Dalton said, “Being [in] one of the most mentally demanding fields in the Navy, if not the military as a whole, I am eternally thankful for the opportunity to better myself and my future, as well as the opportunity to serve in the world’s greatest Navy, in our beloved USA!”
Buzzard was unable to return home prior to his new training schedule. Following his graduation he was given a few hours of liberty and then left the next day for Charleston. He sent along well wishes for loved ones here at home.
“Thank you, friends and family for all of your love and support, especially Granny, Pops and Dad,” he said. “Shout out to my best friend Chris Howard, miss you bro. Also, wishing the best for an old friend, Lindsey Whitley, who is currently undergoing Marine Corps boot camp at Parris Island, S.C. You’re going be great! I’m so proud of you. See you all soon! Hoo Yah!”
