WEST JEFFERSON - With the regular season winding down, the Buckin’ Elks turned in their second straight stellar performance Thursday night up the mountain in West Jefferson.

Elkin used a three-run fifth inning to edge Ashe County 4-2 and stay in the hunt for the 1A Mountain Valley Conference title.

The Elks jumped ahead in the third and never looked back. The three-run fifth pushed the advantage out to 4-0 as Elkin held on for the 4-2 victory.

The Elks cranked out 10 hits on the night, led by a 3-for-4 day at the plate for Seth Haynes, who upped his season average to .333. The junior also came around to score twice.

Frank Miller, Jamey Cranford and Ted Shore added two hits apiece, while Miller went yard for the second time this year on a three-run shot in the fifth. Cranford roped a RBI double in the third to help power the Elks.

Calvin Yarboro picked up the win with 4.1 strong innings. The senior allowed two earned runs on five hits with four strikeouts. Bubba Bradley helped preserve the win, throwing three shutout frames for the save.

Elkin improved to 6-7 in league play with the victory to maintain a hold on the No. 3 1A seed from the conference. The Elks only trail West Wilkes (6-6) by a half-game in the standings as Alleghany (8-4) remains atop the the perch.

With only three games left, Elkin squares off with the Trojans Monday night in a critical matchup. The Elks then host Forbush and West Wilkes to close out the week and the regular season.
