ELKIN - It only took two swings for Kennedy Lester to top Elkin Tuesday afternoon.

The all-state senior cranked a pair of two-run home runs to deep center to power East Wilkes to a hard-fought 5-2 victory over the Lady Elks at Crater Park.

After falling behind 2-0 in the third, Lester brought the Cardinals even with a long two-run shot in the top of the fourth. In her next at-bat in the sixth, the senior followed suit and belted her second longball of the afternoon in nearly the same spot to give East a 4-2 lead that it would not surrender.

Hannah Brown added an insurance run in the seventh with a RBI double to center to give the Cards a 5-2 cushion.

Brandi Parks picked up the win in the circle after throwing seven strong innings, scattering eight hits across a complete-game gem. Parks out-dueled Elkin ace Cayley Shoemaker, who was handed the tough-luck loss.

The Elks jumped out to a 2-0 lead in the third. After Shoemaker and Kirstan Beaver ripped back-to-back singles to lead off the frame, Rebekah Cranford smoked a run-scoring groundout to to second. Bethany Turner followed with a RBI infield single to short to give Elkin a 2-0 lead.

But the Elks were unable to hold on as Lester and Parks powered East to victory.

The Cardinals kept pace in the rugged Mountain Valley Conference standings with the win, improving to 7-3 in league play. Elkin fell to 7-5 with the loss.
