MILLERS CREEK - The young Rams continued their recent surge with a signature win against 1A-leading West Wilkes Tuesday night.

Starmount rode big hits from Ben Combs and Tanner Mathis to the critical 14-5 victory, winning for the third time in its last four games after struggling to open the season.

Combs finished 2-for-3 in the game with five RBIs and two runs scored. The junior highlighted a back-breaking six-run third inning with a monstrous three-run shot to center to give the Rams a 4-1 advantage.

Mathis roped a double and a triple and crossed the plate three times offensively, while pitching 3.2 innings of solid relief. Luke Shore picked up the win on the mound after a strong outing, allowing just two hits to a potent Blackhawks lineup.

Offensively, the Rams pounded out 12 hits on the night and scored a season-high 14 runs to breeze past West. Seven of the nine starters recorded a base hit, while all nine either scored a run or collected a RBI in a complete performance.

Shore paced the way with three hits and two RBIs, while Sawyer Davis picked up two hits in four at-bats. Caleb West went 2-for-3 and scored a run with Zack Worley and Jeremy Whitaker adding base hits on the night.

With the win, the Rams improved to 4-8 on the year and 4-5 in the rugged Mountain Valley Conference. Starmount has won its last three league games to move up in the standings.

The Rams look to continue their surge Tuesday against 2A rival Ashe County before taking on Battle of the Bridge foe Elkin Friday night in Boonville.
