The Town of Elkin North Carolina was recognized on March 27, 2013 by the North Carolina Great Places Initiative as a “Great Place in the Making.”

The recognition was made public at the NC Legislature’s Town Hall Day in Raleigh. The panel of judges giving the recognition to Elkin noted that Elkin’s Main Street is once again becoming a hub for community gatherings, with prospering small businesses, crafters, and new shops.

The judges noted the activity generated by events year-round which bring residents and visitors to Main Street. Also notable were the trails through downtown and the restoration of The Liberty multi-use property on Main Street to create an event space.

“The recognition is indicative of the collaborative efforts by Town staff, the Town elected officials, the Main Street Advisory Board, the Downtown merchants, and a plethora of basis other local groups and individuals. We are thrilled and honored by the recognition and feel our historic downtown has much to offer our citizens and visitors alike,” said Lloyd Wm. Payne, Jr., ICMA-CM, town manager, Town of Elkin.

“We were very honored. Mt Airy was honored last year. The nicest part was that all the towns of Surry County were there with us,” said Mayor Lestine Hutchens.

“I have always known that Elkin is a great place in the making,” said Elkin Commisioner Cicely McCulloch who also owns the old Liberty building on Main Street in downtown Elkin . “I have put money on it now with the Liberty project. I could not be prouder of the Liberty project and all the great work that Garanco Inc. has put into making it a beautiful place.”

The North Carolina Chapter of the American Planning Association’s (APA-NC) North Carolina Great Places Initiative annually recognizes vibrant town centers that help build a community. Through this program, the APA-NC recognizes great places in our state and the partnerships that have made them possible. The awards signify the highest standards of achievement. They highlight work in North Carolina that is worthy of attention.

An expert panel selected Main Streets in Elkin, Blowing Rock, Davidson, Fayetteville, and Raleigh as Great Places from dozens of nominations. Clayton’s Riverwood was selected a Great Place for Kids. The People’s Choice Award was given to Concord based on 2,000 votes received from across the State.
