PILOT MOUNTAIN - East Surry topped Elkin 6-5 in a game filled with late-inning excitement.

Elkin held a 4-3 lead in the sixth inning, but the Cardinals rallied to tie the game.

After Elkin took the lead in the top of the seventh, the home team came back with two runs in the bottom half for the win.

There were 21 hits in this game, but not a single extra-base hit, noted assistant coach Chad Freeman. Elkin had 11 singles and East Surry 10. Both teams committed two errors.

Four different Cards had two hits, and Seth Brim led the team with three RBIs.

Scott Meredith started the game on the mound and pitched two scoreless innings before Elkin could scratch in the third.

The Cards posted three runs in the second inning on Calvin Yarboro.

Catcher Madison Chilton walked, and Meredith dropped a sacrifice bunt to move courtesy runner Casey Marion to second.

Blake Marion reached on an infield single to put two aboard.

Brim singled in Chilton for the first run, then an out later Logan Sheets singled in Marion, with Brim advancing to third.

With runners on the corners, East Surry ran one of its favorite plays. Sheets took off for second base, then Brim waited until the catcher threw the ball to take off from third.

Elkin relayed the ball back home, but Brim beat the throw for a 3-0 lead.

That lead didn’t last long, however, as Meredith lost his control to start the third, noted Coach Barry Hall. He wasn’t hitting his spots, and Elkin reached with four straight hits.

After a ground ball moved the runner on first over to second, Frank Miller hit a shallow ball to left that was misplayed by the outfielder to allow Elkin to go up 4-3.

Neither team would score in the fourth inning, then Cody Ashburn would come on in relief of Meredith in the fifth inning.

Ashburn kept Elkin from scoring in the fifth and sixth.

In the bottom of the sixth, Yarboro came out for Houston Parks. The Cards then scored a run to tie the game.

Weston Payne drew a walk, then so did Sheets to put two runners aboard. One out later, Drew Wilson singled through the right side to score Payne.

In the top of the seventh, Elkin got its only run off Ashburn.

With one out, Ted Shore singled and Jamie Crawford walked. After Miller popped out, catcher Daniel Brinegar hit a swinging bunt and raced down the line to load the bases.

Bubba Bradley singled up the middle to take the lead. Ashburn shut the door by getting Seth Creed to hit into a fielder’s choice.

The Cards wasted no time getting back in the game.

Ashburn led off the last at-bat with a walk.

Meredith dropped a sacrifice bunt, but he hustled down the line and beat the throw to put two runners on.

Blake Marion then squared around and dropped another sacrifice bunt, but he, too, beat the play at first to load the bases.

Brim dumped a single into right-center that scored both Ashburn and Meredith for the win.

Ashburn got the win, improving his record to 4-1 on the season.

Brim went 2-3 with a run and three RBIs. Blake Marion and Meredith were both 2-3 with a run scored.

Sheets was 2-3 with an RBI.
