Motorists traveling between North Carolina to Virginia along the Interstate 77 may see lighter traffic on April 13.

That’s because Elkin and Jonesville are participating in ‘Take a Break from the Interstate,” a tourism initiative that encourages motorists to travel the two-lane roads that Model-T drivers blazed through over a century ago, say organizers.

Those opting to cruise through historic Highway 21 are encouraged to meet in rendezvous points between Elkin and Wytheville, Va., starting at 9 a.m. Gift bags will be distributed for classic and collectible cruisers at each location while supplies last.

Rendezvous locations are in Elkin and Sparta, N.C. and in Independence and Wytheville, Va.

For Elkin and Jonesville, the rendezvous location is at 226 North Bridge St., the Elkin Town Hall parking lot.

For Sparta, the rendezvous point is at the Farmers Hardware, 11 S Main St.

“The Take A Break from the Interstate promotion is one the Elkin Tourism Development Authority supports since it so clearly benefits Elkin and the business of Elkin along its route,” said Leslie Schlender, economic development director for the Town of Elkin.

“Route 21 travels right through Downtown as well as reaching out to our retailers and restaurants along Hwy 21 North of Downtown. It coincides exactly with the Upper Yadkin Wineries all along the route and supports their efforts of promotion as well as bringing them visitors past their front doors,” said Schlender.

According to Schlender, the promotion is geared at steering travelers off the interstate and through Elkin and the other towns along the route in hopes people shop and eat in main street towns.

Each host town throughout Highway 21 participating in the program has a driver depot address similar to an interstate rest stop.

“It’s a place where they can rest, refresh and buy a cup of coffee if they’d like, get some information, and to pick up their free gift bag,” said Schlender.

The driver depot location for Elkin/Jonesville is at 120 East Main, Chill on Main Café. Cruisers stopping in Sparta may pause and shop at the Alleghany Chamber of Commerce located at 58 S Main Street. Independence, VA visitors may go to McKnight Park/Historic 1908 Courthouse on the corner of US21 & US 18, and the Wytheville, VA depot is located at the E. Lee Trinkle Regional Visitor Center at 975 Tazewell Street.

According to the Take a Break from the Interstate website, Elkin is known for its charm and friendly faces, has unique shopping, restaurants and plenty of local wineries. Jonesville boasts 300 motel rooms, a state-of-the-art movie theater and many franchise and locally-owned restaurants serving fabulous food at affordable prices.
