ELKIN - For the second-straight game to open the season, the Buckin’ Elks ran into an ace.

Four days after battling against Alleghany’s Austin Easter, Elkin ran into Wilkes Central ace Austin Staley Friday night with similar results.

Staley limited the Elks offensively, holding them to just three hits on the night, as the Eagles picked up the 5-0 shutout victory.

Jamey Cranford, Drew Shinkle and Seth Haynes recorded the three hits on the night for Elkin, but it wasn’t enough.

The Elks’ pitching staff turned in their second-straight solid performance on the mound in a hard-luck loss. Houston Parks picked up the loss after surrendering three runs (two earned) on 2.1 innings of work.

Calvin Yarboro started the game and threw 3.2 strong innings, striking out five batters.

Elkin returns to the field Tuesday night when rival Starmount comes to town in baseball’s rendition of the Battle of the Bridge.
