The Town of Elkin parking lot is in need of a face-lift, say town officials.

The 4,800 resurfacing of the lot could require an estimated cost up to $100,000.

The lot is approximately 4,800 square feet.

The estimated price tag includes the parking area around Town Hall and the Police Station along with the re-striping of the parking spaces.

“An asphalt structure is only as good as what’s underneath it. We may have sub base concerns,” said Elkin Town Manager Lloyd Payne. “Commissioners have to decide if they want to repair the deteriorating parking lot.”

“These are never good expenses to have on any town,” said Mayor Lestine Hutchens. “But after Main Street in the downtown section of Elkin, the Elkin Town Hall building is one of the most visible town structures. The parking lot is a direct reflection of our image.”

Commissioners were not happy about the news.

Dr. Skip Whitman, who serves on the board of commissioners, reiterated his standing position that Elkin needs to take steps to prepare for these types of expenditures instead of reacting to the costs by clipping into the town general fund.

“We can’t keep tapping into a general fund when we know we will have future infrastructure repairs and costs,” said Dr. Whitman.

Town officials say the last time the parking lot was paved was in the 1970s. The lot used to park cars for a former Chevrolet dealership, now housed by Habitat.

“We believe trucks use the parking lot to make u-turns and the excess weight has contributed to the damage,” said Payne.
