Surry County has two farmers’ markets that will be opening up for the season very soon; Saturday, April 20 in Elkin and Tuesday, April 24 in Mount Airy.

The markets will be selling fresh, local produce, fruits, meat products, eggs, herbs, plants, flowers, and a new for this year: handmade crafts.

The Elkin Farmers Market is located in the parking lot beside of Town Hall. It will be open every Saturday through the Pumpkin Festival in September from 9 a.m.-noon. The Mount Airy location is in the parking lot beside the Mount Airy Post Office. This market will be open from 3:30-6 p.m.

During the early part of the season you can expect to find seasonal products such as lettuce, Swiss chard, onions, broccoli, carrots, radishes, various herbs, plants, jams, jellies, and crafts at the market. Later in the season there will be tomatoes, corn, potatoes, peppers (of all types), peas, blueberries, strawberries, cantaloupe, watermelon and more. All vendors at both markets are committed to selling their own local produce. This means that some vegetables and fruits will only be available during their growing season.

Farmers Market looking for additional vendors to join the group:

Preparations are in progress for the opening of the markets. There will be a “Vendor Informational” meeting for any farmers or crafter who is interested in participating in the markets. The meeting has been scheduled for March 19 at 6 p.m. During this meeting market information, guidelines, and applications will be given to those interested.

Vendors pay one fee for attending one or both markets. This gives farmers the opportunity to sell product for 48 markets. In the past these markets have sold fruits, meat products, eggs, herbs, plants, flowers, produce, and handmade crafts. Again, all products at the market are local. The market is an exciting way to meet farmers who have grown what is served at your table.

If you are interested in participating as a vendor please call the Extension Center at 401-8025 for more details or to register for the Vendor Informational meeting.
