ELKIN - The Lady Elks “ran out of gas” Tuesday night against powerhouse West Wilkes, falling 63-33.

Getting a ceremonial start on Senior Night, injured senior Madison Durham gave Elkin an early boost. Durham drilled a deep trey on her first - and only - shot attempt of the season, putting the Elks up 3-2 early.

But from then on, it was all West.

The Blackhawks grabbed a 19-8 lead at the end of one, and pushed their advantage out to 30-11 at the break. Elkin had no answer for West’s outside shooting, falling behind 48-19 at the end of three.

In the fourth, the ‘Hawks put the finishing touches on a 63-33 victory.

With the loss, the Lady Elks finish the season at 2-14 and sit in danger of missing the Mountain Valley Conference tournament next week. Elkin trails Alleghany (2-13) in the standings after the Trojans slipped against Forbush.

Alleghany, which has lost 10-straight games, including a 48-21 loss to Elkin in January, return to the court tonight against East Wilkes in the season finale.

The Elks hold the tie-breaker virtue of their victory over fourth-seeded Wilkes Central - if teams are tied in the final standings and have split the regular-season meetings, tie-breaker goes to the squad who beat the higher seed (Alleghany’s highest-seeded victory came over No. 7 Starmount).
