Elkin, coming off its first victory of the season over Alleghany, came out on fire. The Elks grabbed an 8-6 lead at the end of one, using an outside game.
Bethany Turner drilled Elkin’s second trey of the second quarter to start an 11-4 burst as the Elks took a 22-16 edge into the locker room.
After Carrie Brown grabbed two offensive rebounds and laid it back up, Elkin pushed its lead out to 29-20 midway through the third. But the Rams fought back, ending the third on a 10-4 run to cut the lead down to three at 33-30.
The Elks responded and extended its advantage out to six at 40-34 on a Courtney Beals three-point play with 6:24 left in the fourth. The Rams battled back once again, completing the comeback on two free throws by Mackenzie Hutchens, drawing even at 41-41.
Brown banked a runner of glass to give Elkin a 43-41 lead before Walters sank a pair from the charity stripe to send the game to an extra session tied at 43-all.
In overtime, Walters scored all 11 points in the frame to carry the Rams to the thrilling 54-40 victory.
