SPARTA - Starmount knocked off Alleghany Tuesday night to pick up its first Mountain Valley Conference victory of the season.

Powered by freshman big man Kyler Gregory, the Rams used a 24-point fourth quarter to top the Trojans 64-55 up the mountain in Sparta to notch their first conference win.

Gregory poured in a game-high 16 points to lead Starmount, while Jonah Shore added 10. Gunner Cass recorded nine points on the night with Nathan Williams and Luke Shore tacking with eight and seven points, respectively. Eight Rams scored on the night.

Starmount jumped out to a double-digit halftime advantage at 29-19 before seeing the Trojans storm back on their home court.

Alleghany out-scored the Rams 21-11 in the third quarter to knot the game up at 40-all heading to the fourth, where Starmount put the game out of reach. The Rams dropped 24 points in the frame to top the Trojans, 64-55.

With the win, Starmount improved its overall mark to 2-11 on the season and 1-6 in conference play.

In the first game of the varsity double-header, the Lady Rams lost a heart-breaking 63-62 decision to Alleghany.

Heading to the fourth quarter tied at 39-39, the Trojans out-scored Starmount 24-23 in the frame to edge out the one-point victory.

The Lady Rams, who dropped to 2-7 on the year and 2-5 in the conference with the loss, struggled to contain senior Mika Sprinkle, who poured in a game-high 29 points on the night.

Starmount returns to the court Tuesday night in Boonville against East Wilkes in their first home game since December 5. The Rams then hit the road against North Surry and West Wilkes on Wednesday and Friday, respectively.
