The Wilkes County Sheriff’s Office informed The Tribune that second degree murder charges were filed against Karen Marie Laws of North Wilkesboro.

Laws was charged on January 7 after an investigation revealed that she had provided prescription narcotics to the 14-year-old victim which resulted in his death, say police.

“This tragic incident is a striking reminder that prescription medication is dangerous and it is your responsibility to maintain control of your medications and not provide those medications to others,” said Major David Carson of the department.

The defendant’s aunt, Sherry Church, disputes the charge and stated to The Tribune that her niece “shouldn’t have been charged and the arrest was a rush to incarcerate.

“She’s still without an attorney too,” said Church. “She can’t afford one.”
