PILOT MOUNTAIN - Both East Wilkes squads tipped off the CFE Shooutout at East Surry last week in big ways, winning their opening-round matchups handily.

The Cardinals breezed past North Stokes 62-49, while the Lady Cards followed suit with a 49-38 victory over the Vikings Thursday night in Pilot Mountain.

In the boys game, East dished out a season-high 18 assists en route to the dominating victory.

Abram Logan paced the offense with 12 points, while Avery Wallis recorded a double-double with 11 points and nine dimes. McKinley Johnson added 10 points with Jared Bryan and Dillon Gray tacking on nine and eight points, respectively, in a well-balanced scoring performance.

East jumped all over the Vikings in the second quarter, outscoring North 18-2 in the frame to turn an 11-10 lead after one to a comfortable 29-12 advantage at the break.

In the second half, the Cards held serve, matching North point for point as they fought back into the game.

Despite allowing 24 points in the final period, East cruised to the 62-49 victory.

In the girls game, East used a strong second-quarter run to pull ahead of the Lady Vikings before holding on for the 49-38 triumph.

After a slow start (six points in the opening frame), the Lady Cards outscored North 15-5 in the second to take a 21-18 lead into the locker room.

East then outscored the Vikings 13-10 in the third quarter and 15-10 in the fourth to pull away late for the 11-point victory.

In their second-round game, the Lady Cards struggled against host East Surry, falling 66-39 Friday.

East Surry (10-1) got 20 points from Sydney Mosley as the Cardinals cruised to the victory.
