The Republican Party picked State Rep. Shirley Randleman to serve out the term of the late N.C. Sen. Don East of the 30th Senate District seat on the Republican ticket.

Votes are in, and unofficial results indicate that Randleman will serve the next term as Senator of the 30th district in N.C.

According to unofficial election results Tuesday evening, Randleman received 64.55 percent of votes, and Ric Marshall received 35.45 percent of votes. This corresponds with 46,942 votes for Randleman and 25,781 for Marshall.

After East’s sudden death last month, due to complications following back surgery, the party had to decide on a replacement for him under state law, because it was too late to replace his name on the ballot.

The party picked Randleman, Wilkes County’s representative to the North Carolina House of Representatives, who had served in the House since 2008. Each vote that was cast for East, went to Randleman.

Randleman said she and the late senator had similar views on polices.

“I’m pro-God, pro-life and pro-gun,” she said. “I feel the citizens of the 30th District are overtaxed and over-burdened with regulations. In order to attract business, North Carolina must remain a right-to-work state and the General Assembly must continue in its efforts to rein in regulations.”

Randleman’s previous election record:

Mrs. Randleman first won the House seat in 2008, defeating Roger Smithey and John Reavill in the Republican primary and then beating Democrat Larry Pendry in the general election.

Mrs. Randleman won her party’s nomination in 2010 by again defeating Reavill in the primary. She won a second term with her November victory over Democrat David Moulton.
