Josh Strickland and the Buckin’ Elks ran wild on Alleghany Friday night to advance to the second round of the 1A state playoffs.
ELKIN - The Buckin’ Elks returned to the postseason in a big way Friday night at Grissom Stadium.
After a one-year hiatus from the playoff scene, Elkin ran all over Mountain Valley Conference opponent Alleghany en route to a dominating 44-6 victory in the opening round of the 1A state playoffs.
Jamiles “Chunky” Hayes once again powered the Elks to a win over the Trojans, matching his four-touchdown outburst from the regular-season meeting on October 19.
Hayes ran wild on Alleghany, racking up a team-high 157 yards on the ground on 23 carries with four rushing touchdowns. Seth Creed and Kody King added 37 and 35 rushing yards, respectively.
Josh Strickland was efficient through the air, throwing for 111 yards on 7-of-10 passing and one touchdown strike.
Chris Hudspeth hauled in two receptions for 26 yards, while Ted Shore added a 31-yard catch. Sam Lane tacked on a 21-yard snag, with Tyrek Hayes bringing down an acrobatic 33-yard touchdown catch in the endzone in the fourth.
The stout Elkin defense forced three turnovers on the night and held the Trojans to just 190 yards of total offense. The Elks recovered two Alleghany fumbles, while King picked off a pass.
Elkin got on the board first when Jamiles Hayes scampered 32 yards for the opening score before running it in from seven yards out as the Elks jumped out to a 16-0 lead in the first half.
Coming out after halftime, Elkin found paydirt three times to put the game out of reach. After a Creed three-yard score, Jamiles Hayes punched it in from 10 and 11 yards out to push the lead out to 35-6.
King added an exclamation point to the victory when he hauled in an acrobatic 33-yard touchdown catch that received praise from WXII 12’s Kenny Beck on Friday night’s High School Playbook.
The Elks advance to the second round where they will host 5th-seeded Rosman. The 6-5 Tigers topped Thomas Jefferson Academy in their opening round matchup.
