Students at Elkin High School and Elkin Middle School got a glimpse into several different careers at Wednesday’s “Career Connections,” a career and curriculum fair that was held on campus at Elkin High School.

Exhibitors were set up at the fair based on the 16 career clusters. The 16 career clusters that had representative present at Wednesday’s event were:

  • Agriculture, food and natural resources
  • Architecture and construction
  • Arts, A/V technology and communication
  • Business, management and administration
  • Education and training
  • Finance
  • Government and public administration
  • Health science
  • Hospitality and tourism
  • Human services
  • Information technology
  • Law, public safety, corrections and security
  • Manufacturing
  • Marketing, sales and services
  • Science, technology, engineering and mathematics
  • Transportation, distribution and logistics

“The fair gave students an opportunity to network with people in careers in each of the clusters to gain a better understanding of the types of careers that are out there and what the education and job requirements are for the types of jobs,” said Patsy Burgess, Career Development Coordinator at Elkin High School.

“The curriculum aspect of the fair involved career people from specific clusters being paired with teachers who teach content that leads to these careers. Along with teachers and reps from business and industry sharing with the attendees, students from various areas shared presentations and did demonstrations relating to various careers as well.”

October is National Career Development month. Each student who attended the fair gained career awareness and exposure through a variety of lessons that were integrated into their classes as a part of their visit, according to Burgess.
