ELKIN - The Buckin’ Elks summoned some late Homecoming magic to pull out an improbable 21-20 win over North Wilkes Friday night.

Trailing 20-7 in the fourth quarter, Kody King scored two touchdowns in the final seven minutes to give Elkin the thrilling one-point win on Homecoming night.

After North took a 20-7 lead on a 28-yard touchdown pass from L.J. Hendren to Josh Martin early in the final quarter - Hendren missed the extra point attempt - King and the Elks went to work.

King broke free on a 32-yard scoring run to jump start the comeback with 7:07 left on the clock.

Strickland then hit King on a two-yard strike to tie the game at 20-20 with 48 ticks remaining. Coley McCulloch drilled through the ensuing point after attempt for the game-winning score.

With the win, Elkin improved to 4-3 on the year and 3-2 in the Mountain Valley Conference. The Elks now sit atop the 1A standings, a half-game ahead of North (3-3) and West Wilkes (3-3).

Ekin ran for 265 yards against the Vikings, led by Jamiles Hayes’ 115 yards. Strickland and King added 78 and 72 yards on the ground, respectively.

Strickland was limited through the air, throwing for 47 yards on 6-for-13 passing with one score and two picks.

Chris Hudspeth hauled in two catches for 31 yards with Hayes recording two catches for 10 yards.

North jumped out to a 14-0 lead, blanking Elkin in the first half.

Hayes got the Elks on the board when he darted through the Viking defense for a 63-yard score.
