The Surry County Sheriff’s Office is investigating a shooting in State Road that occurred shortly before midnight on Wednesday.
Sheriff Graham Atkinson said Robin Key, 45, of 572 Burcham Road, State Road, was undergoing surgery Thursday morning at Wake Forest University Baptist Medical Center in Winston-Salem.
Her husband, Brian Key, 41, called 911 at 11:51 p.m. to report that his wife had shot herself in the stomach with a handgun, according to a sheriff’s office release..
Officers arrived and secured the scene for emergency medical personnel who transported Key to meet AirCare.
Atkinson said she gave a statement prior to being transported that her husband had shot her.
“The shooting apparently stemmed from an argument between the couple,” Atkinson said. “Today we are investigating a suspicious shooting and waiting to be able to talk to Mrs. Key again.”
