Martha Catherine Harris passed away on Saturday, Sept. 22, 2012, at Wesley Long Hospital. Born on Dec. 6, 1929, in Winston Salem, she was the daughter of Raymond and Elizabeth Harris.

The family moved to Elkin in 1940 where she received her high school degree. She was a 1952 graduate of Duke University and in 1958 received a Masters of Social Work degree from Richmond Professional Institute. She worked for the Guilford County Department of Social Services for 40 years helping abused and neglected children.

Martha had a kind, cheerful and loving heart with a backbone of steel in her generous approach to all humanity. She was quick to point out and attempt to right any injustice to humanity. Martha was a devoted protector and lover of all cats, dogs and other animals. She loved used book sales and could often be found washing dishes at family gatherings. Martha dealt with her own final illness with courage, dignity and a non-complaining attitude of acceptance and gratitude for her life with us. She never forgot that her neighbor was her friend. She was well loved by family and friends and will be deeply missed.

She is survived by her sisters Nancy H. Roberts and Elizabeth H. Clary, her brothers-in-law, Howell W. Roberts, and Thomas A. Clary, her nieces and nephews Elizabeth R. Gilgoff and husband David, Mary-Howell Martens and husband Klaas, Thomas R. Clary, and Catherine C. Huneiti and husband Ayman as well as three great nephews, and a great niece, Peter, Daniel, and Elizabeth Martens and Taleb Huneiti.

A memorial service will be held on Wednesday, Sept. 26, at 10:00 a.m. at Forbis & Dick Funeral Service, 5926 W. Friendly Ave., Greensboro. The 2:30 p.m. burial will be at Hollywood Cemetery, N Bridge St., in Elkin N.C. In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to: Animal Rescue & Foster Program of NC (ARFP), P.O. Box 77393, Greensboro, NC 27417-7393; Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals, 3163 Hines Chapel Rd., Greensboro, NC 27405 or a charity of the donor’s choice.
