Local residents are mourning the death of Charles Dowell, owner of the iconic Snappy Lunch. He died Tuesday morning following a long-term illness.

Dowell, 84, was known for his “World Famous Pork Chop Sandwich,” and for the many years he stood in the window of the eatery cooking the iconic pork chops while tourists pressed their faces to the window to watch.

The restaurant opened in 1923. He started working there in 1943 and became the owner in 1960. The restaurant received national fame from The Andy Griffith Show, which featured a restaurant named “Snappy Lunch” in the fictional town of Mayberry.

Moody Funeral Home will be helping the family with the arrangements, which are not complete at this time.
