Former Elkin Police Capt. Jeff Poteat was honored for his services at Monday’s Elkin Town Hall Meeting.

Poteat retired from the force on June 29 after 27 years of service with the force.

“Thank you for giving me the opportunity to serve Elkin,” he said.

Poteat was presented with a certificate and the gun and badge he used while working with the Elkin Police Department.

“You have done a wonderful job over the last 27 years,” said Elkin Mayor Lestine Hutchens.

Elkin’s new police captain, Chris Leonard, was introduced to the commissioners as well.

“I’m thankful for the experiences I’ve had in Elkin so far,” Leonard said. “I came from a small town so that’s why I chose Elkin. My job has been made a lot easier because of the path Jeff Poteat paved.”
