Richard Boyd, 74, has never grown anything this large.

“I’ve grown a nine pounder, an 11 pounder,(and) a 12 pounder, but never a 16-pound cantaloupe,” he said. “I don’t think I will ever surpass that.”

Boyd, who lives off Austin Traphill Road, planted the Burpee Cantaloupe in early May. He also grows watermelon, squash and tomatoes.

“I didn’t do anything special to it,” he said. “All you need to grow is water, fertilizer and sunshine.”

Boyd plans to give the cantaloupe to his doctor.
