First Baptist Church youth are spreading the word in New York this week.

The youth left last Saturday to take part in a camp program for children ages 5 to 12.

“We will be doing a Bible study in Mid-town Manhattan,” said minster of youth Chris Hughes. “We have a history with MetroBaptist Church and have a done a couple events with them in the past.”

A mixed group of 13 adults and five high school students will be returning from their trip on Saturday, Aug. 4.

Hughes hopes that by helping out at the camp, that the First Baptist youth will learn more about servitude.

“I hope they will learn what it means to serve and put Christian faith in action,” he said. “It will show how people in different areas live differently. The youth can reflect on how other people live, how we live and can use that towards changing our lives when we return.”

Not only will the youth see how lives are different in New York, but also how the Baptist community is different, she said.

“I want the youth to see how different Baptist communities operate in different contexts,” Hughes said. “Having a Baptist church in New York City is a lot different than having a Baptist church in Elkin, N.C. I want this to spark ideas of what we could do with our own church in Elkin.”
