The first official day of high school football begins today across the state, with teams hitting the field in preparation for the 2012 season.
East Wilkes kicked things off first in the area with a summer minicamp last week in Ronda. The minicamp officially began the JK Adkins era for the Cardinals in hopes of building on last year’s 3-8 season.

The Buckin’ Elks, looking to rebound from a 1-9 campaign a year ago, are holding their first practice this morning at 9:30 a.m. in Elkin.
A host of new Rams begin their Mountain Valley Conference title defense tonight in Boonville with their first practice from 6-8:15 p.m.
The Golden Eagles, coming off a solid 7-4 season a year ago, open practice at 6-9 p.m. in Dobson.
Teams will hold practices and scrimmages over the following three weeks to prepare for the upcoming season, set to kick off August 17.
East Wilkes heads to West Davidson in Week 1, while Elkin travels to East Montgomery. Starmount opens the year at home against area rival Mount Airy, with Surry Central taking on MVAC powerhouse Wilkes Central.
