PAC swimmers earn state championship medals

CHARLOTTE - Julie Hicks and Avery Tucker represented the North Piedmont Aquatic Club (PAC) this past weekend in the North Carolina 14 and Under Long Course Championship held at the Mecklenburg Aquatic Center.
Coached by Leah Tunstall, the duo earned a total of nine medals (top eight finishes) in the 10 and under girls division.
“PAC Swimming was represented exceptionally well in the North Carolina Championship,” Tunstall stated. “Both Avery and Julie really swam well all weekend.”
In Friday’s first event, Tucker earned a third-place overall finish in the 50 meter freestyle with a time of 32.77, while Hicks finished fourth with a time of 32.82. In the 100 meter butterfly, Tucker finished 26th with a time of 1:33.79.
In the final event of the day, Tucker recorded a fourth-place finish in the 50 meter breaststroke with a time of 43.92, while Hicks finished 13th with a time of 46.57.
On Saturday, Hicks earned a fourth-place finish in the 200 meter freestyle with a time of 2:37.51. In the 100 meter breaststroke, Tucker finished fifth overall with a time of 1:34.20, while Hicks recorded a 1:41.52 to finish 20th overall.
In the 100 meter backstroke, Hicks took second place with a time of 1:21.27 with Tucker finishing 18th with a time of 1:27.60.
On Sunday, the final day of competition, Hicks took second overall in the 50 meter backstroke with a time of 37.75, while Tucker finished 12th overall with a time of 39.48. In the 200 meter individual medley, Hicks finished 10th by posting a time of 3:02.17.
Tucker added a sixth-place overall finish in the 50 meter butterfly with a time of 36.06.
In the final event for both swimmers, Hicks finished the 100 meter freestyle in fourth with a time of 1:12.25, while Tucker finished 10th overall with a time of 1:14.81.
For the championship meet, the swimmers combined to finish in the top ten in eleven total events. In addition, PAC totaled 159.5 total points to place 12th overall in the girls division among the 46 teams that participated in the event.
The ten and under age group consisted of approximately 60 swimmers from the state of North Carolina that qualified for the event.
“They swam tremendously and I am extremely proud of their accomplishments,” Tunstall added.
Hicks and Tucker are both fifth graders at Shoals Elementary School in Pinnacle.
