After two years of serving downtown Elkin, Theresa Knops is stepping down as Main Street and Community Manager.

Moving to the area from Utah in Oct. 2011, Knops acted at the liaison between the Town of Elkin and the Main Street Advisory Board. Knops’ last day with the town will be on Friday.

She did not comment on the details of her resignation, but she said she hoped to stay in the area.

“She has done a lot of great things with the Main Street program and started many excellent programs,” said Town Manager Lloyd Payne. “She has really helped empower Main Street and accomplished a great deal with grants such as the Façade Grant.”

Knops helped with putting the “Welcome to Elkin” sign up, was in charge of the quarterly newsletters that were sent out and worked with the Over Mountain Victory Trail.

The town is moving forward looking for a replacement and hopes to fill the position by September, Payne said.

The Main Street manager position was created in the 1990s as a part time position when Elkin was made a Main Street Community. In 2010, the title changed to Main Street and Community Manager to encompass more than just Main Street and also focus on community-wide project, Payne said.

Prior to her work in Elkin, Knops worked for the Utah Department of Public Safety managing grants, Knops said.

“I want to express my appreciation for her work in the two years she’s been here,” Payne said. “She has down great things downtown and with the farmers’ market. We will miss her and hope we can find someone as qualified to replace her.”
