Doris Anthea Martin Gabbard Michael, 93, of Elkin passed away on June 23, 2012 at her home. Doris was born in Surry County on November 19, 1918 to the late Alice Lora Martin Cox Martin and John Winston Martin.

Doris is preceded in death by her parents, Alice Lora Martin Cox Martin and John Winston Martin; her first husband, Taylor Price Gabbard, of Berea, KY, her second husband Jacob Leonard Michael of Davidson Co, NC; and her sister Lucille Wolfe (Henry Bartow) of Charlotte, NC.

Doris is survived by her brother Benjamin Hamlin Martin (Sadie) of High Point, NC, her five children, Michaela Cox (widowed) of Elkin, NC, John Taylor Gabbard (Patricia) of Keller, TX, Charlene Rebecca Bowen (Rondal) of Sparks, NV, William Alexander Gabbard (Mary Alice) of Lenoir City, TN and Nicholas Winston Gabbard (Darlene) of Lexington, NC. She also leaves eight grandchildren, five great grandchildren and numerous cousins.

Raised in the Little Richmond (formally Rusk) community of Surry County she graduated as valedictorian of the class of 1935 at Dobson, NC and went on to attend Berea College, Berea, KY where she completed two years study prior to marriage to Taylor Gabbard.

Completing her last two years of her chosen field of music education at Berea College in 1954 with 5 children, she returned to her childhood home in the Little Richmond community, where she taught music and later fourth grade classroom in the Surry Public School System until her retirement.

Doris has been an active member in The Salem Fork Christian Church (Disciples of Christ) for much of her life. Using some of her many talents, she painted “Christ in the Garden” and “Peace, be still”, which hang in the church. Her later efforts have been directed to the thriving pre-school at her church.

A memorial service will be held in her honor on Monday, June 25, 2012, 11:00a.m. at Salem Fork Christian Church with Rev. June Haislip officiating. The family will receive friends from 10:00-11:00a.m. prior to the service.
