SPARTA - Starmount righty Tanner Mathis was nearly unhittable Wednesday afternoon in Sparta.
The junior threw a one-hit gem with five strikeouts to power the Rams to a convincing 11-0 victory over Alleghany in a make-up game.
Offensively, Mathis racked up three hits in four plate appearances and plated three runs to pace Starmount’s 11-run outing.
Hunter Myers collected two RBIs, while Chase Thompson added two doubles and a RBI.
Starmount opened up a 3-0 advantage in the first three frames before exploding for an eight-spot in the fifth.
The Rams plated eight runs in the inning to open up an 11-0 lead, leading to a mercy-rule victory after Mathis shut down the Trojans in the bottom of the fifth.
Starmount racked up nine hits on the afternoon with six players collecting a base hit.
Red-hot senior Dillon Bray cooled off a bit, but still went 1-for-3 in the game and scored two runs. Dillon Dobson picked up one hit in one official plate appearance and was brought home twice on two walks.
Eugene Billips, Jeremy Whitaker and Samuel Stone each recorded an RBI to round out the scoring for the Rams.
With the win, Starmount improved to 6-4 on the season, including a strong 6-2 mark in a deep Mountain Valley Conference race, good for a third-place standing.
The victory also marked the second-straight, mercy-rule game for the Rams after topping North Wilkes 11-1 last Friday.
For a team that struggled to score runs for a few games, Starmount has plated 38 runs in its past four games, helping the Rams go 3-1 in those contests.
Starmount returns to the field tonight with a double-header against West Wilkes and East Surry. The matchup with the ‘Hawks starts at 4:30 p.m. with the second game following.
