Paul Martin of Elkin passed away on Nov. 2, 2011, at the Joan & Howard Woltz Hospice home in Dobson. He was 89.


Mr. Martin was born in Wilkes County on Feb., 2, 1922, to the late Duke Ward and Nora Vertie Foster.


Mr. Martin moved to Buffalo, N.Y. in 1944, where he worked for many years with companies such as Betlehem Steel and Dupont. Mr. Martin returned to Jonesville in 2006. He loved fishing, gardening, building, and was a jack of all trades.


In addition to his parents, he was also preceded in death by his wife, Margaret Jackson Martin; daughters, Cheryl Stroud, Paula Battles; sisters, Nancy Valentine, Vennie Ward, Margie Thomas.


He is survived by sister, Ida Mae Whitaker of Jonesville; aunt, Lucille Jones of Portsmouth, Va.; step-son, Richard Jackson of Youngstown, Ohio; grandchildren, Tiffany Smiley and husband David, Valerie Nesbitt, Damon Stroud, Daria Stroud, Lavette Polk and husband Michael, Kevin Battle, Shawn Jackson; a host of great-grandchildren; nieces and nephews, Betty Gray and husband Clarence, Deborah Valentine, Billy Valentine, Tommy Valentine and wife Mary Ann, and several other loving nieces and nephews; and special friend, Shelia Gray.


Funeral services will be held at 1 p.m. Saturday, Nov. 5, 2011, at Piney Grove United Methodist Church with Rev. Clyde Moore officiating. Burial will follow the service at Crestwood Memorial Gardens. The family will receive friends at Piney Grove United Methodist Church on Saturday, Nov. 5, 2011, from 12-1 p.m. prior to the service.


The family of Mr. Martin wishes to express their sincere thanks for the flowers and other expressions of love during our time of bereavement. They would also like to give special thanks to the staff of Mountain Valley Hospice and Joan & Howard Woltz Hospice Home for the loving care that was given to Mr. Martin.
