Saturday, September 24, 2011 marks the date for the 15th Annual Yadkin Valley Pumpkin Festival to be held in Historic Downtown Elkin.
The festival generally brings more than 15,000 visitors to downtown Elkin to enjoy live entertainment, shopping, food and gigantic pumpkins.
The festivities begin Saturday morning with the 6th Annual Great Pumpkin Weigh-Off at The Elkin Tribune office at 214 East Main St. There will be pumpkins from growers located all over the East Coast. Some will weigh in at an excess of 1,000 pounds, and their growers will hope to place in the international’s Great Pumpkin Commonwealth top 10.
Other fruits and vegetables are also allowed to be entered to compete for bragging rights and cash prizes. Last year, Janet and Chris Kent broke the Watermelon World Record with their 291 pound watermelon.
Main Street in Elkin will be lined with vendors of every description featuring everything from funnel cakes to functional pottery, wood furnishings to wine racks, barbecue to baked goods, pumpkin butter to polish sausages, handmade accessories, a variety of children-oriented activities and displays, and the the ever-popular pie-eating contest.
