GRAHAM -- One big inning for Burlington doomed Surry Post 123 in the first game of a best-of-five American Legion playoff series Monday night.

Post 63 exploded for 15 runs off 13 hits in the bottom of the fifth inning to erase a 2-0 Surry County lead and earn a 15-2 victory on the opening night of the Area III Northern Division tournament.

Jordan Jessup took the loss for Post 123, the No. 8 seed. He was relieved by Brent Hall. Cale Rogers got the win for top-seeded Burlington (19-4).

Game 2 Tuesday at Mount Airy High School was rained out.

The series will shift back to Burlington for two seven-inning games on Wednesday, beginning at 6 p.m.

Surry (6-16) needs to win one of two tonight to get the series back to Mount Airy for a Game 4 on Thursday night.

The two teams split the regular season series, with Post 123 taking a 6-5 victory at home and dropping a 4-1 decision on the road.

In other first-round Northern Division playoff action late Monday, No. 4 Western Forsyth beat No. 5 Eastern Randolph 11-7, No. 7 Winston-Salem topped No. 2 Randolph County 7-5 and No. 6 High Point defeated No. 3 Kernersville 10-9.
