SCC to offer fire and rescue classes in June and July


DOBSON — Surry Community College has several upcoming classes designed for fire and rescue workers.

• Trained Rescue Series: Water Rescue will be held June 26-28, July 24-26, and Aug. 21-23. Friday classes will run from 6 to 10 p.m. and Saturday and Sunday classes will run from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. at The Elkin Center, 1461 N. Bridge St., Elkin. This block course will present the Technical Rescuer with the knowledge, skills, and ability to satisfy the requirements of Chapters 11 and 12 (surface and swift water) of NFPA 1006: Standard for Technical Rescue Professional Qualifications. It covers all four required parts of the Technical Rescuer Water certification course series as outlined by the NC Fire and Rescue Commission: FIP-6405 TR Water: Rescue Operations; FIP-6406 TR Water: Rescue Technique; FIP-6407 TR Water: Rescue Transportation; and FIP-6408 TR Water: Rescue Victim Management. This transfers as one “all or nothing” block to the Office of State Fire Marshal (OSFM). Students must successfully complete all portions to receive certification credit for this block course.

• Firefighter Certification: Fire and Life Safety Prep will be held on Tuesdays and Thursdays, July 7-16 from 7 to 10 p.m. in Room 216 at The Yadkin Center, 4649 U.S. 601, Yadkinville. This certification-related course will present the firefighter candidate with the knowledge, skills, and ability to satisfy the requirements of Chapters Five and Six of NFPA 1001: Standard for Firefighter Professional Qualifications. This course is designed to assist the candidate in all functions of a fire and life safety program including: inspections, prevention, education, and cause determination. This course is part of the NC Firefighter Certification Program approved by the NC Fire and Rescue Commission for offering as of Jan. 1, 2015.

• Trained Rescue Course: Ag Machinery Rescue will take place July 17-19 at the SCC Emergency Services Training Center behind the baseball field off Comer Boulevard in Dobson. The Friday class will run from 6 to 10 p.m. and Saturday and Sunday classes will run from 8 a.m. until the material is covered. This course is a component of the NC Fire and Rescue Commission Technical Rescuer (TR) certification. The class presents the technical rescuer with the elements that come into play at agricultural machinery rescue incidents. Pre-planning, site-surveys, incident plans and size up will be covered. Design features of various pieces of farm equipment will be discussed. Upon completion, the technical rescuer will have practical skills for correctly gaining access to, stabilizing the environment, the machinery, and the patient; as well as packaging and removing the patient from an agricultural rescue incident.

• Firefighter Hose, Streams, and Appliance course will be held on Tuesdays and Thursdays, July 21 through Aug. 4 from 7 to 10 p.m. at the SCC Emergency Services Training Center behind the baseball field off Comer Boulevard in Dobson. This certification-related course will present the firefighter candidate with the knowledge, skills, and ability to satisfy the requirements of Chapters Five and Six of NFPA 1001: Standard for Firefighter Professional Qualifications. This course will provide the firefighter candidate with the opportunity to demonstrate the use of hoses, nozzles, adaptors, and appliances, and to obtain the information needed to conduct an annual service test of fire hose. This course is part of the NC Firefighter Certification Program approved by the NC Fire and Rescue Commission for offering as of Jan. 1, 2015.
