Lady Cards pull off upset in first round

BEAR CREEK — East Wilkes was able to hold off a late charge from Chatham Central to hang on for a 52-51 win, advancing to the second round of the NCHSAA 1A state playoffs.

East Wilkes, who received the 23rd seed, knocked off the 10th-seeded Chatham Central Bears thanks in large part to a big game from Alexis Pardue. She led the way with 19 points and 12 rebounds on 7-of-11 shooting.

Tess Jolly scored 14 points that included four makes from three-point territory. Chelsea Edwards added six points, Lauren Johnson had five, Olivia Bullard scored four, Gracie Brown had two and Ashlyn Nixon scored two.

The Cardinals trailed by one point at halftime and then surged ahead to take a 41-34 lead going to the fourth, eventually hanging on for the win.

Overall, the Lady Cardinals shot 38-percent from the floor and 37-percent from three-point range (7-of-19).

East Wilkes is now 16-9 overall and will be at home in the second round of the playoffs after Andrews was able to upset seventh-seeded Lincoln Charter, 54-42.
