EAST BEND — A memorable season of high school basketball came to an end in heartbreaking fashion for the Forbush girls on Tuesday night.

After leading for much of the evening, the Lady Falcons couldn’t hold on to a lead in the fourth quarter and were beaten 62-59 in the first round of the NCHSAA 2A state playoffs by visiting East Rutherford.

Forbush, which ends the season at 20-7, jumped in front during the second quarter, carrying a 33-25 lead into intermission and a six-point edge into the final eight minutes, but were outscored 19-10 down the stretch as the Lady Cavaliers (18-8) pulled out the victory.

East Rutherford, the third-place team in the South Mountain 2A/3A league, advanced to a second-round showdown at North Surry (20-6) on Thursday night.

The Lady Falcons had their usual strong performance from Calyn Davis (32 points) and Kala Doub (17), but the pair didn’t get a lot of help from their teammates. No other Forbush player scored more than four points.

A 22-point second quarter gave the Lady Falcons the edge. In that frame, Davis hit a pair of 3-pointers and scored a dozen points by herself. She then added three more treys in the third quarter.

Sidney Matthews, with four, and Taylor Wooten, Casey Brown and Kayla Shore, all with two, rounded out the scoring for Forbush.

The loss concluded the careers of Lady Falcon seniors Doub, Shore, Wooten, Alisha Baity and Ariel Montoya. It was the most successful season of Forbush girls’ basketball since the 2006-07 team posted a 19-6 record. This year’s team also had the distinction of winning both the Grayson National Bank Holiday Classic and Western Piedmont Conference tournament titles.
