The Lady Elks left no doubt in their fans minds that they want to make it to the state finals as they outshot Chatham Charter on their way to a 62-25 win in the first round of the state playoffs Tuesday at home.
In the first quarter, Elkin came on strong, outscoring the Lady Knights 31-7 by the end of the quarter. In the second quarter, the Lady Elks scored 18 to Chatham Charter’s four points, ending the half at 49-11.
In the second half, Elkin scored 13 points to Chatham Charter’s 14, as the Lady Elks rested their leading scorers, but the damage had already been done and 29th-seeded Chatham Charter couldn’t recover.
Top scorers for the Lady Elks were Kyle Thomas with 14, Miracle Walters with 13, Kenly Burchette with 11. Others contributing were Samantha Cozart, 8; Cameron Beals, 6; Kimmie Lomax, 4; and Morgan Randleman, Reagan Parks and Cassidy Cook, with two each.
Scoring in the doubles for Chatham Charter was McKenna Nixon with 11. Others scoring were Landin Eldridge with 6; Savannah Gaskins, 3; Kayle Jordan, 3; and Avery Harris, 2.
The win moves fourth-seeded Elkin into the second round to host 20th-seeded Swain County at 5:30 p.m. Thursday.
