Brackets for the 1A boys and girls basketball tournaments were released late Saturday afternoon, and Elkin, Starmount and East Wilkes each will field a team with a chance to win it.
By winning the regular season conference championships and performing well in the tournament, Elkin and Starmount earned the top seeds for the Mountain Valley Athletic Conference in the girls and boys.
The No. 4 Elkin girls will host No. 29 Chatham Charter Tuesday night in the opening round. The East Wilkes Cardinals girls fell in the semifinals to Wilkes Central, and opted for a coin flip to determine the third place seeding. Unfortunately for them, they lost the toss, and are on the road Tuesday night against No. 10 Chatham Central.
The Starmount boys won their third-straight regular season championship and went on to win the tournament Friday night. They’re ranked seventh in the West, and host No. 26 North Moore Tuesday night.
East Wilkes lost to Ashe County in the opening round of the conference tournament, and just barely earned a spot in the state tournament. They’ll be looking for a major upset when they travel to No. 2 Lincoln Charter Tuesday night.
Missing the cut
Elkin boys and Starmount girls did not make the cut to participate in the state tournament this year.
