WEST JEFFERSON — Another season of basketball in the Mountain Valley Athletic Conference concluded Friday night in Ashe County with the conclusion of the MVAC tournament for the girls and boys.

In the end, it was Starmount defeating Ashe County 69-48 to win the boys tournament, and North Wilkes defeating Elkin 60-40 in the girls tournament.

GIRLS FINAL

For years, if the Elkin girls basketball team was at the final game of the tournament, they were in the crowd cheering another team on. Head Coach Derek Carter made it a goal at the start of the season to change that, and they did.

Unfortunately for the Lady Elks, they couldn’t find the stroke they needed as they fell to 2A North Wilkes 60-40 in the championship game.

The third time was the charm for North Wilkes, who had lost both regular season games to Elkin by a combined nine points. Despite leading 14-9 after the first, the Lady Elks were held to single digits over the next two quarters. During that time, the Vikings went on both a 6-0 run and 9-0 run to pull away for good.

“North, they did a good job tonight. I thought they played really well after they got going, and you can’t dig a hole against a team like that,” Carter said.

The two teams shared the regular season conference championship, and are both poised to make deep runs in the playoffs in their own classes. Elkin earned a No. 4 seed in the West and will host No. 29 Chatham Charter Tuesday night.

“This is what you play for. We’ve got some goals set, and it’s to be playing ball for a few more weeks,” Carter said.
