WINSTON-SALEM – With a limited supply of six runners from the tri-county area competing in the 1A/2A Indoor Track & Field State Championship, one could think that there wouldn’t be much competition between one another, but they would be wrong.

In fact, the 3200 meter run saw Elkin, East Wilkes, and Forbush all compete together for glory. In the end, Dakota Mendenhall of Forbush beat the rest of his closest competition, but it was not enough to be state champion. Mendenhall finished sixth in the event with a time of 10:15.60, while two runners from Brevard finished 1-2. Kyle Rhodes of East Wilkes finished right behind him with a time of 10:20.01, and was one of three runners to shave off time from their seeding. Elkin’s Jacob Parker finished 13th in the event with a 10:35.85.

The rest of the runners belonged to Forbush. Monserrat Andrade finished 14th in the girls 55 meter hurdles, just missing out on the finals. Anna-Kathryn Kilby was the second highest of the Forbush finishers with a fourth place finish in the mile run with a time of a 5:39.03.

Mendenhall also competed in the same event for the boys, finishing second by .86 seconds. Madisun Shore finished tenth in the girls 500 meter dash, while Kilby finished ninth in the 1000 meter run, and 11th in the 3,200 meter run.
